The World Cup trophy will be at San Mamés on Saturday for Athletic’s La Liga opener against Sevilla at 17:00, part of a tour honouring Spain’s champions crowned on 19 July.
El Correo reports that the pre-match ceremony will salute Unai Simón, Nico Williams and Aymeric Laporte following their triumph in the United States, with Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, a former Athletic player, in the directors’ box.
Elene Gurtubay and Ziara Vega will also be recognised for their Under-19 European title in Bosnia. A minute’s silence will be held in memory of goalkeeper Carmelo Cedrún.
The tour began on Tuesday at the Wanda Metropolitano during Atlético de Madrid’s meeting with Málaga. It is scheduled to reach the Bernabéu on 26 August, then the Camp Nou on Thursday 27, the Reale Arena on Saturday 29 and Balaídos on Sunday 30 August.
Beyond Athletic, the other five top-flight clubs with Spain internationals from the World Cup are Real Sociedad, Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona, RC Celta de Vigo and Club Atlético de Madrid. After the stadium tributes, the trophy will embark on a countrywide tour to bring the national team’s success closer to supporters.
