Carrick was appointed interim head coach until the end of the season following the sacking of Ruben Amorim in mid-January.

The 44-year-old has already exceeded all expectations, winning seven of his first 10 matches in charge, while registering two draws and one defeat.

Cesc Fabregas would entertain Man Utd job

Thanks to his remarkable stats, Carrick has established himself as the favourite for the permanent role, especially amidst the lack of top-notch managers available on the market.

Nevertheless, INEOS have yet to make any commitments on this front, keeping their options wide open. Therefore, potential candidates for the Man Utd job continue to circulate in the media.

According to Materazzi, Fabregas would be interested in the role if MUFC were to call him, despite his past at Arsenal and Chelsea.

“If Manchester United asked Cesc Fabregas, he would think about it. Chelsea too,” said the 2006 World Cup winner in his interview with Hajper (via Goal).

The 38-year-old took his first managerial role at Como, the club that witnessed the last chapter of his elusive playing career, and he has already turned heads with his early exploits.

The former Arsenal captain guided the nouveau-riche Italian club back to the top flight in 2024, and they currently sit in 4th place, leading the Champions League race ahead of Juventus, Roma, and Atalanta.

Therefore, Materazzi believes the Spaniard is in no rush to leave the rapidly rising Serie A club, as he might be aiming for bigger achievements on the shores of Lake Como.

“Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are all very big teams in the Premier League, but Como is a club with a lot of money and I don’t know if Fabregas wants to try and stay one more year to take Como to the Champions League and show what he can do.

“Maybe he can surprise everyone and win the league too with Como?”

Fabregas had memorable spells at Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea. He registered 50 goals and 118 assists in his 350 Premier League appearances.

Marco Materazzi explains why Man Utd should keep Michael Carrick

In addition to Fabregas, Materazzi was asked if Man Utd should try to bring former Chelsea and Spurs boss Antonio Conte back to the Premier League.

However, the notorious Italian defender feels that Carrick has done enough to warrant the club’s trust, backing him to claim the permanent role.

“Manchester United have to believe in Carrick because the job he is doing right now is very good. He knows everything about Man United. He is a serious man. I like him a lot.

“Conte is one of the best managers in the world… maybe Conte is the answer? But with Carrick, they are already building something bigger, so why not stick with Carrick?”

Materazzi might not be universally revered, but the points he brings about Carrick will resonate with a large section of the Man Utd fanbase, who believe the club should give their former midfielder enough time to try to kickstart a new winning dynasty.

While the path towards glory remains long, the spirit at Old Trafford hasn’t been this high in many years.
