FC Bayern are about to kick off their 2026 campaign against Wolfsburg. Away from the pitch, Sacha Boey is a topic of conversation. Max Eberl has once again commented on the Frenchman’s possible departure.
At the press conference ahead of the first competitive match of the year, Bayern’s sporting director hinted that a move for Boey in the winter is not out of the question. According to Max Eberl: „If a player wants to move, you have to talk about it. There are players for whom we say: no chance – and there are others for whom we would be willing to talk.“
Although Eberl expressly emphasized that he would not mention any names, the question relating to Boey and the current situation shed a clear light on his statements.

Eberl had already commented on Boey’s role in the team after the 5-0 friendly win at RB Salzburg: „When Hiroki is back and Phonzie is back, we have a lot of very high-quality full-backs, and then it can be really difficult for one or two players. Then it also makes sense to think about making a change.“ He also reminded everyone that the transfer window is open until February 2, so there is still plenty of time to make a decision.
The 25-year-old has hardly played a role under Vincent Kompany this season. His last appearance was against Bayer Leverkusen on 1 November, since when he has not featured, even though he has often been in the squad. He was officially absent due to illness recently and also missed the game in Salzburg for the same reason. He will also not be in the squad against Wolfsburg.
According to the Münchner Abendzeitung newspaper, Boey is said to have been criticized internally for his attitude, with one incident in particular causing displeasure: during a planned substitution, he is said to have changed his clothes for too long, whereupon Kompany cancelled the change at short notice.
Boey only moved to the Isar from Istanbul in January 2024 for around €30 million, but repeated injuries have repeatedly set him back – muscle tears, meniscus problems and an ankle injury have already caused him to miss 36 competitive matches. He has featured in 14 games this season, only six of them from the start.
A departure in the winter break is considered likely. Crystal Palace in particular are said to be showing great interest. According to AZ, the English club are keeping a close eye on the situation. Possible intermediary: sporting director Christoph Freund, who knows Palace coach Oliver Glasner from their time together in Salzburg. A transfer fee of 15 to 20 million euros is being mooted.
