Former Preston North End loanee Liam Millar is set to be the target of plenty of Championship interest this summer, with Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland among the teams that will battle for signature.

The Basel midfielder is currently off preparing for some international games before he heads to the Copa América to play for his national team, Canada.

Millar impressed during his season-long loan at Deepdale, and two of the newly relegated sides, plus the Black Cats, are said to be keen on the 24-year-old, according to The Sun.

Preston chief Peter Risdale told BBC Radio Lancashire that a potential return deal for their former player is possible, but that they are looking in other directions too.

"Are we still talking to him, his agent and Basel? Yes," said Risdale, via LEP. "I don’t know what the outcome will be so I am planning without Liam but that isn’t a foregone conclusion that he won’t be coming back."

Sheffield United fan's view on potential Liam Millar move

Owain Wyse, Football League World'sBlades fan pundit, believes that Millar would be a very smart addition to Chris Wilder's side.

He said: "I think Millar seems a good link. This summer is going to be massive. We're going to be linked with a lot of players, and we're going to need a lot of players to fill the squad for next season.

"Players like Millar, at the age of just 24, that are able to bring a strong pedigree of playing at a good level, should be the ones that we're focusing on.

"He dropped in at wing-back or as a left-midfielder for most of the season, and I think that he would suit Wilder's system as a wing-back.

"We like our full-backs to bomb on and provide creativity from the wide areas. He'd also be able to provide some cover on the opposite side. He played a few games on the right for Preston. He's played a few games up front too.

"I think that he would be a good signing for us."

Liam Millar could be a very easy fit into Chris Wilder's system

Risdale didn't seem overly optimistic about bringing back the Canadian international to Preston, but he may have just been holding his cards close to his chest.

If it does come down to the other three Championship sides, then Bramall Lane feels like the best place for Millar, stylistically.

Wilder's back-three system, which deploys wing-backs alongside the defensive unit, is most akin to the one that the 24-year-old has thrived in for the past season.

While the future of the Blades is certainly up in the air, with the massive club-wide overhaul that is needed to get them to the place they want to be, which could be helped by a change in ownership, similar can be said about Sunderland and Burnley.

Both sides are without a manager/head coach, as things stand, and there's no guarantee that a player like Millar will fit into the plans of the new bosses' plans.

There is an expectation that experience will be added to the squad, rather than going for the trend of building a very young team. Millar would be a nice blend of the two for United to bring in.
