Wrexham could soon seal their second signing of the summer following their Ryan Hardie move earlier this month.
Wrexham are reportedly in talks to sign former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Stuart Armstrong.
That’s according to The Wrexham Insider, who go on to reveal the Welsh club hold a “strong belief” they can land the player.
Armstrong only joined the Owls in January from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps, but it was announced he was to be released as a free agent this summer.
The midfielder would become the Red Dragons’ second signing of the summer following their capture of Plymouth Argyle striker Ryan Hardie.
Armstrong became available following his release from the Owls, just months after he left Vancouver Whitecaps to sign for the Yorkshire side.
Phil Parkinson’s side believe they have a “very good chance” of landing the 33-year-old this summer, according to The Wrexham Insider via TBR Football’s transfer expert, Graeme Bailey.
It has been stated by Bailey, however, that there are a number of Championship sides interested in capturing the services of the Scotland international.
As such, the Red Dragons may need to move quickly to make use of their promising position in the race.
Armstrong would bring an incredible level of experience with him to the Racecourse, with 222 Scottish Premiership appearances and 149 Premier League appearances to his name.
He’s also incredibly adaptable, having played almost everywhere on the pitch other than in defence and between the sticks during his lengthy career.
But his age won’t escape the notice of any connected with Wrexham, with the side already carrying a relatively old squad.
All of Dan Scarr, George Evans, Elliot Lee, Jack Marriott and Ollie Palmer are in their early 30s, with 35-year-old Jay Rodriguez and 36-year-old James McClean even more advanced.
The extent to which those more experienced pros will play in Wrexham’s upcoming campaign remains to be seen, but some around the club may have hoped to see Parkinson lower the age profile rather than raise it this summer.
The Scotland international only made six starts after joining the Owls in January, so it remains to be seen whether Armstrong still has a full second-tier season in him at 33 years old.
Should Armstrong seal a move to North Wales, he couldn’t have asked for an opening day with more sentimental value.
The Red Dragons open their Championship campaign with a trip to recently relegated Southampton, in a lunchtime kick-off that will prove a massive occasion for Wrexham.
His first game for a new club would already be a big moment for Armstrong, but should he get the deal signed, he’ll be kicking off his Red Dragons career at a ground very familiar to him.
Armstrong made 214 appearances for the Saints in a six-year stay with the club, before jetting off to Vancouver on a free transfer, and as such, that debut would likely see the midfielder welcomed warmly onto the pitch by both sets of fans.
There may be some concerns to be had about Armstrong’s potential move to Wrexham, but it’s easy to see why the Red Dragons see the midfielder’s current situation as an opportunity.
