Wrexham certainly aren't hanging around, this summer.

With six new players having already arrived this summer, they're now planning a seventh, with an attempt to take Conor Coady to The Racecourse Ground ahead of their first season in the Championship since 1982.

The Red Dragons finished as runners-up to Birmingham City at the end of the 2024-25 season, their third promotion in fourth seasons, but having not played at this level for more than four decades, the Championship is uncharted territory for the club and further reinforcements are necessary if they're to continue their recent rise.

There's plenty of experience among the players they've already brought in, including former Sheffield Wednesday attacking midfielder Josh Windass and the former Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien, but they're now plotting a move for a player with serious Premier League credentials.

Wrexham are planning a move for Premier League star Conor Coady

The Daily Mail reports that Wrexham are set to make an offer for Conor Coady, the England international defender who has ten caps for his country and who has made almost 200 Premier League appearances, as well as 179 in the Championship.

The Mail report that there is a degree of mutual appreciation between the club and the player in this case, with Coady, who is estimated to earn £75k-a-week, reported to be an admirer of the club and manager Phil Parkinson in the market for a new central defender.

Coady has just been relegated from the Premier League with Leicester City and has a year left to run on his contract at The King Power Stadium.

The Mail reports that there will likely be a fee payable for him, but with Wrexham having already broken their transfer record twice this summer, most recently on the Empoli full-back Liberato Cacace, the money is clearly there to facilitate the transfers that the club needs, if they're to be competitive at the higher level.

Coady would bring a wealth of experience to The Racecourse Ground

The arrival of Conor Coady at The Racecourse Ground would certainly be a statement signing for a club who were still playing non-league football just three years ago. Coady was capped for England ten times between 2020 and 2022 and was in the squad for both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

But it's his club record that really stands out. Coady has played Premier League football for Liverpool, Wolves, Everton and Leicester City.

At Wolves, he was an important part of the team that finished 7th in the Premier League for two consecutive seasons in 2019 and 2020, and which reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League before narrowly losing to Sevilla in 2021. Coady also has a wealth of experience in the Championship with Huddersfield, Wolves and Leicester, so he's already familiar with the peculiarities of this division.

There's been a lot of speculation about which high-profile players Wrexham would want to sign in preparation for their season ahead. If they can secure Conor Coady's signature, they'll have brought in a player who has not only bags of experience, but bags of the very experience that Wrexham need as they embark on the next step in their adventure.
