Wexham are expected to spend in the summer market, but they’re unlikely to have a £30m war chest as has been claimed.

The Red Dragons made history this season as they recorded a third successive promotion under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, which means they will be in the Championship next season.

Despite the remarkable journey, the ambitious owners have made it clear they want to take Wrexham to the Premier League.

And, it appears the club will be prepared to spend big to achieve that dream, as recent reports have claimed that Phil Parkinson and the recruitment team will have a £30m kitty to improve the squad.

The club will receive additional revenue and exposure from their promotion, although such a figure would easily make them one of the biggest spenders.

So, when asked by FLW whether he expects such an outlay this summer, Wrexham fan pundit Liam Grice admitted he doesn’t envisage the club spending to such a degree, even with their increased income.

“As much as I would love that to be true, I really can’t see it, despite all the sponsorship money we’re bringing in, we’ve got a partnership with ESPN to show ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ on their channels, so that’s another revenue stream But, despite all these revenue streams, I really cannot see us having £30m to spend in the Championship.

“Don’t get me wrong, we’ll definitely have made around that figure after winning promotion, but there are other expenses like redoing the pitch to meet UEFA standards, wages, paying the staff and general maintenance, so I don’t think all the money will be able to go on transfers.

“I do think we’ll have £5-6m to spend, but £30m does seem extreme going into next season.”

No matter what Wrexham’s budget is this summer, they are going to have to spend wisely to ensure they are competitive in the Championship next season.

Given their remarkable rise, there will be doubts about Parkinson’s squad, and you would expect major changes to be made to the group over the coming months.

The boss will have a clear idea of the type of player he wants, and the owners have shown over the years that they will back him where possible.

It will be a very exciting summer for Wrexham, and if they are to survive and flourish in the Championship, the club will need to have a big hit rate with the signings they make in the upcoming window.
