Stoke City's Niall Ennis is of interest to Wrexham and Barnsley

Stoke City are believed to have received enquiries from League One duo Wrexham and Barnsley for striker Niall Ennis ahead of a potential deadline day departure from the Bet 365 Stadium.

This update is courtesy of Darren Witcoop, who reported the interest in the Stoke frontman via his X account this morning.

Stoke are reportedly in pursuit of Leicester City's Tom Cannon, who has been the subject of interest from many clubs across the Championship. It appears as though Cannon's potential arrival will push Ennis out of the exit door, with teams in League One looking to strike a deal in the dying embers of the window.

Wrexham and Barnsley interested in Stoke City's Niall Ennis

Witcoop's latest report does not disclose the potential fee that would be needed to take Ennis away from the Potteries although it does reveal that both Wrexham and Barnsley have made enquries over the forward's availability. Ennis is reportedly a target for a number of League One clubs looking to get a deal done today.

Albeit at different stages of the window, ambitious newly-promoted League One side Wrexham have been linked with Championship strikers in Tom Bradshaw and Will Keane, despite already boasting the likes of Paul Mullin, Steven Fletcher, Jack Marriott and Ollie Palmer in North Wales.

Barnsley, meanwhile, are also in the market for another striker. The Tykes are awfully short-staffed there at present with just Sam Cosgrove and Max Watters as senior options, with last season's top scorer Devante Cole joining West Bromwich Albion following the expiration of his deal at Oakwell.

Stoke City should move Niall Ennis on amid Wrexham, Barnsley interest

Despite only moving to Stoke this February, it simply has not worked out for Ennis and it feels as though he is already some way down Steven Schumacher's pecking order.

To date, he has returned just one goal from 18 appearances and is yet to start in the Championship for Stoke this season, and with their interest in bringing in another striker, it is difficult to see him ascending in Schumacher's thinking anytime soon.

Ennis has a solid body of work across League One but has not cracked the Championship in his career thus far, meaning a return to the third-tier of English football would likely benefit all parties. Wrexham are perhaps not in as much need of a striker as Barnsley but he would still be a welcome addition to Phil Parkinson's side, while Ennis would be able to get the regular opportunities his career needs with the Tykes.

It does appear as though Ennis will be on the move and that is surely the best course of action for all involved.
