Wrexham, promoted in each of the past three seasons, are surging again. Four straight wins, and only two defeats in 16, have left the club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac one point off the Championship play-offs.
According to NY Times, beating Norwich City on Saturday could bring their highest league position since the late 1970s. An FA Cup penalties win over Nottingham Forest, secured despite a 90th-minute Callum Hudson-Odoi equaliser, and an unbeaten record against the current top six have stoked belief.
A fourth successive promotion would be unprecedented, no side has ever gone from the fourth tier to the top flight in back-to-back seasons, let alone after first escaping the National League. Wimbledon and Luton Town needed nine years to complete that leap.
Automatic promotion looks likely to be fought out by Coventry, Middlesbrough and Ipswich. For Wrexham the play-offs are the target.
Around 70-74 points may be required. Wrexham have 40 from 26, and 36 from their past 21 at roughly 1.7 per game. Keep that up and they would reach 74, usually enough for sixth.
The run-in helps, only trips to Coventry and Bristol City remain among current top-eight opponents. They are unbeaten in 10 league games at the SToK Cae Ras.
Squad depth has told, Sam Smith covered for top scorer Kieffer Moore and George Thomason filled in at left wing-back. Cup progress is crowding the diary, with Bristol City already postponed and further rearrangements possible. A play-offs berth looks attainable if momentum holds.
