Wrexham have apologised after opening a new training pavilion at Colliers Park without planning permission.

Wrexham.com reports that the case went before Wrexham Council’s planning committee this week, where chair Cllr Mike Morris criticised the club for lodging a retrospective application and urged those in charge to follow proper procedure.

Chief executive Michael Williamson said earlier this month that first-team players had begun using the Gresford facility, which the club hailed as a major step as they chase Premier League promotion. However, it was built and opened before formal consent had been secured.

An application was only submitted in August when the pavilion was near completion, prompting an objection from Gresford Community Council.

Chief strategy officer Aidan Miller issued a sincere apology to the committee and local residents for starting works early. He said the club scheduled construction for the summer off-season to limit disruption, chose an established sporting site and designed the scheme to reduce impacts. He added that Wrexham engaged with the planning process, including pre-application consultation and responses on parking, highways and phosphate mitigation.

Council officers recommended delegated authority to approve once outstanding feedback from Natural Resources Wales and highways officers arrived. Councillors, however, deferred the application while awaiting details on the feasibility of connecting foul drainage to the main sewer, so the matter will return at a later date.
