Wrexham are battling Hull City, and a host of clubs across Europe, to sign striker Bamba Dieng.

Wrexham enjoyed a positive first season back in the Championship last time out, even if there was disappointment that they failed to make the play-offs.

Nevertheless, that shows just how much progress the Red Dragons have made since their Hollywood owners bought the club, and there will be a belief that they can benefit from the new format, which means the top eight will have a shot at promotion to the Premier League.

As well as that, under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham will continue to invest, and they are expected to be active in the market over the coming weeks.

Whilst there will be different areas of the pitch that Phil Parkinson wants to strengthen, Wrexham are likely to be in the market for at least one new attacker, and it has been claimed by TEAMtalk that Bamba Dieng is a target.

The Senegal international is without a club after leaving Lorient this summer, but the update explains that Wrexham won’t have a free run for the 26-year-old.

They state that even though the Welsh club have offered Dieng a contract that would make him the highest-paid player in their history, he does have other offers on the table.

Hull City, who can offer Premier League football, are in the mix for his signature, and there are also clubs tracking the former Marseille man in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Yet, they add that the ‘most likely’ outcome right now is that Dieng will move to a club in France or Spain, with Valencia, Real Betis, Sevilla and Nice among those keen on the player.

Dieng scored ten goals in 22 games for Lorient in Ligue 1 last season, which saw him earn a place in Senegal’s World Cup squad, but his only outing in the tournament was a late sub appearance in their defeat to France.

Wrexham must target quality to improve Phil Parkinson’s squad this summer

This was never going to be an easy deal for Wrexham to do, as Dieng has a very good pedigree, and he enjoyed a very productive previous campaign in France.

So, when he was available on a free transfer, there was always going to be lots of interest, and that has proven to be the case.

In a way, it demonstrates how far Wrexham have come that they are even competing with some of these clubs for a player, and by offering a record-breaking deal, it shows the ambition is there.

Clearly, if they can get Dieng over the line, it would be a massive coup, and he would bring something different to the squad with his pace and direct style.

That shows the type of forward that Wrexham want, and most would agree that they could benefit from someone who has that speed to run in behind, and someone who can offer a ball-carrying threat.

Ultimately, it will be interesting to see how this plays out, and it will be difficult for Wrexham to land Dieng when they are against top flight sides, but the club are right to target high quality individuals this summer, as they don’t need an overhaul as the foundations are in place for the club to push for promotion this season.
