Callum Doyle has always boasted an array of talent many could only dream of having. Entering their first Championship campaign in decades, the Red Dragons price they paid for his services was something that had been questioned previously.

Manchester City’s academy product is proving instrumental to this team’s recent success. At the same time, he could hold the key to pulling off what would arguably be their biggest upset in club history when they square off with Chelsea in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Callum Doyle's reputation prior to Wrexham

From his early days at the Man City academy, it was clear that Doyle had the tools to become a strong and versatile footballer. He possessed a high-quality range of passing, was strong on the ball and was more capable of playing out from the back. He’s also capable of playing in a centre-back role or down the left, and that versatility has made him a sought-after player. Along with that he had defensive awareness, was strong in duels and particularly sharp in recoveries.

To get him some valuable playing time, City loaned him out to various lower-tiered clubs, including Sunderland, Leicester City, Coventry City and Norwich City. Doyle not only gained experience during that time but also contributed to some of his temporary club’s great successes.

While on loan at Sunderland during the 2021-22 campaign, Doyle featured 36 times for them domestically, helping them earn a League One promotion via the play-offs. During that spell, he finished second on the team in blocks per 90 and interceptions per 90, according to FotMob.

His time with the Foxes was limited to fewer than 20 Championship caps in 2023-24, though he was still part of the team that was promoted back into the Premier League.

Last season, we saw his attacking attributes on full display, leading Norwich in Championship assists (7) and accurate long balls per 90 (3.7) according to FotMob. He also ranked second on the team for accurate passes per 90 (68.7), while also putting forth some strong long-range efforts.

In addition, Doyle had some familiar faces in the current Wrexham team who he previously played with, including Ben Sheaf during his time at Coventry and Nathan Broadhead while on loan with Sunderland.

On the international stage, Doyle had a knack for coming up big in key moments. His early second-half strike versus Israel in the 2022 European U-19 Championship final leveled their match at 1-1. The Englishman went on to lift the trophy with a 3-1 victory in extra-time.

When you put it all together, most of the most loyal Red Dragons supporters were over the moon when he joined them.

Wrexham paid a hefty price to sign Callum Doyle

As you might imagine given his talents adding Callum Doyle to the Wrexham payroll did not come cheap. ESPN reported last August that the club had paid a £7.5 million fee for the Manchester-born defender. As part of the deal, Man City reportedly will get 25% of any future moves involving him.

Before arriving in North Wales, Doyle had over 150 appearances and was seen as someone who filled a desperate need at the back. It was expected that he and Conor Coady would be the commanding presence Phil Parkinson needed in defence. It never worked out with Coady, though Doyle is showing why the club made such a strong investment in him. Even so, there was a time early in this campaign when fans wondered whether the club had wasted their money by bringing him to Wrexham.

While much of Phil Parkinson’s backline was receiving heavy scrutiny early in this Championship campaign, Doyle got his share of criticisms as well. Among the lowest points for him this season came on matchday 11 at home to Oxford United. The 21-year-old incurred a senseless red card in a 1-0 triumph. That suspension and Dan Scarr's strong early defensive play seemed to wake up the Manchester defender, who has come on strong for Wrexham in 2026.

He wasn’t an overnight sensation for the Red Dragons, but Doyle’s technical ability is paying dividends. The youngster’s poise and movement from the back have proven massive for this group.

This year, we have really seen him come to life with his presence going forward, enabling Wrexham to surge up the table. His first goal with the club showcased many of his technical skills that the club saw in him and convinced them to pay him such high wages. It is also a moment that neither he and nor fans won’t soon forget.

Thanks to his efforts, Wrexham are in the hunt for what could be an unpredictable fourth successive promotion. While his contributions have Wrexham fans dreaming of the Premier League, the defender and his team are aiming to pull off a momentous upset this weekend.

He’s already played his part in one Premier League upset this season, but Doyle and the Red Dragons are hungry to pull off a much more improbable one this weekend. They will aim to knock off giants Chelsea on Saturday in the FA Cup.

The Blues boast plenty of high-priced talent, with perhaps the biggest being Cole Palmer, someone Doyle will know well. The two previously trained together at the Man City academy. In their thrilling FA Cup upset against top-flight side Nottingham Forest, Doyle was instrumental. He had a 72% pass accuracy over the 120 minutes, winning eight of his 12 duels, and making his share of recoveries and strong defensive performances. He also scored in the shootout.

We don’t know how many first-team players Liam Rosenior will send out there on Saturday, but we do know Doyle will be leaned upon heavily on both ends of the pitch. While Chelsea are not in the top-flight title race, this game could be a measuring stick for Wrexham to see if they’re ready to compete with a talented team at the Premier League level. A win on Saturday might very well be even greater than some of their past victories in the FA Cup, including their incredible 1992 triumph over Arsenal 2-1.

For Doyle, it’s a chance to show teams at that level, including Man City, what they missed out on. He knows that Saturday is a big moment for him to show exactly how capable he is and what his career may be destined to be.
