Wrexham headers punish Portsmouth as play-off bid stays on track

Wrexham beat Portsmouth 2-1 at the STōK Cae Ras, staying sixth in the Championship play-off places after first half headers from Sam Smith and Max Cleworth proved decisive.
In the 23rd minute, Smith glanced in Callum Doyle's cross. Cleworth doubled the advantage with a close-range header from George Dobson's delivery after a corner (39.).
After the restart, Zak Swanson halved the deficit with a rising finish (49.). Colby Bishop then headed wide from a corner as Portsmouth pushed to level (54.).
Phil Parkinson turned to his bench, introducing Kieffer Moore (67.) and Oliver Rathbone (68.) to help regain control in midfield.
Nicolas Schmid kept the visitors in the game late on, saving from Lewis O'Brien (85.) and parrying George Thomason's effort (87.).
John Swift was forced off injured before the interval, with Adrian Segecic replacing him (42.).
Wrexham produced 10 attempts, five on target. Portsmouth had 60% possession and 15 corners but registered only one shot on target.
Next, Wrexham visit Charlton. Portsmouth host Hull.
