3 alternatives Swansea City could consider now a deal for Joe Low looks unlikely.

Luke Williams has suggested in his latest update that he’s set to look elsewhere for a new centre-back, as a deal with Wycombe Wanderers for Joe Low has failed to materialise.

The Swans manager has been vocal in his admiration of the 22-year-old over the last month, making it publicly clear that Low was a player he wanted to sign this month.

This led to ex-Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield hinting that he wasn’t happy with Williams publicly unsettling a player, calling it disrespectful to talk about players at other clubs.

However, now Bloomfield has left for Luton Town, the Chairboys have made it quite clear that the Welshman isn’t for sale this window. Having played in all but one of Wycombe’s matches this season, losing Low will be a massive blow to their promotion chances.

In response to this, Williams confirmed last week that he was headed for the Netherlands over the weekend to look at two potential alternatives, now a deal for Low seems off the cards.

However, that particular trip was later called off. A miserable 3-0 thrashing in the South Wales derby highlighted the Swans’ defensive issues, which the ex-Notts County manager will look to address in the next two weeks.

It’s unknown who these players are that Williams was supposed to be looking at, but we’ve come up with three potential Low alternatives the 44-year-old could look to pursue.

Mike Eerdhuijzen

An Eredivisie player who could be on the Swansea manager’s radar is Mike Eerdhuijzen.

The Sparta Rotterdam centre-back was strongly linked with a move to League One outfit Birmingham City in the summer, but a transfer never happened. This has seen the Dutchman remain at Sparta, where he’s featured 17 times for De Kasteelheren in the Eredivisie in 2024-25.

Tall, powerful, and comfortable playing out from the back, the 24-year-old possesses very similar qualities to Low, which could be perfect for what Swansea need. With Sparta in a relegation battle, now could be a good time for Eerdhuijzen to jump ship.

Sil Swinkels

Aston Villa’s Sil Swinkels has reportedly been on the radar of many Championship and League One clubs this January, with a potential loan move for the defender in Villa’s mind.

The Dutchman has impressed for Villa’s under-23s and looked strong in his only senior appearance this season, which ironically came against Wycombe.

The 21-year-old has been capped at youth level for his country, after rising through the ranks at Vitesse and Villa Park. Now, he is looking to make his first steps into senior football and Swansea could be a good destination for the youngster.

Similarly to Eerdhuijzen, Swinkels possess all the qualities of an ideal modern centre-back, as well as bringing that Premier League pedigree from his years in the Midlands.

Whilst this move could present a bit of a risk due to his lack of senior football, the reported interest suggests that it isn’t a concern for potential suitors.

Max Cleworth

This is a bit of a controversial option considering Max Cleworth is being touted as the future captain of Welsh rivals, Wrexham.

However, the 22-year-old has established himself as a top defender at League One level. Despite having a poor game against Shrewsbury Town last Thursday, Cleworth has been impressive for the Red Dragons across the current campaign.

Netting five goals in his 22 appearances so far, the Chester-born defender is a desirable aerial presence in both boxes. However, the youngster committed his future to Wrexham in the summer with a new contract that runs until 2027. If the Swans were unable to strike a deal for Low, signing Cleworth could prove just as hard.

Despite this, he's been one of the most impressive young defenders in League One this season, along with Low. If Swansea are looking for a similar player to their original target, Cleworth will surely be on their shortlist.
