Wrexham are set to do battle with Feyenoord to sign the Eredivisie goalkeeper
Wrexham are set to go up against Robin Van Persie’s Feyenoord side in a battle to sign FC Groningen goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen.
The Red Dragons experienced a mixed start to the 2025/26 Championship campaign but have enjoyed an upturn in form recently.
Phil Parkinson’s side are unbeaten in their last six second-tier matches and have picked up 12 points during that time, moving them to within a victory of the top six.
With sides such as Southampton and Leicester City failing to compete at the top of the table so far this term, opportunities have opened up for other teams to secure a potential shock promotion to the Premier League.
This won’t be lost on Wrexham, as they aim to add some talent in between the sticks during the January window.

During the summer transfer window, Wrexham weren’t shy about flexing their financial might on the rest of the division despite having just been promoted from League One.
Players such as Ben Sheaf, Callum Doyle, Dom Hyam, Josh Windass, Nathan Broadhead, Lewis O’Brien, Ryan Hardie and Kieffer Moore all moved to the Welsh outfit, adding sufficient quality to Parkinson’s ranks.
Now, the Red Dragons are aiming to strengthen their goalkeeping department during the January window.
According to Dutch news outlet Voetbal International, Wrexham are viewed as serious contenders to sign Etienne Vaessen.
The Surinamese international has kept four clean sheets in 11 Eredivisie matches this season, conceding just 10 times.
A strong start to the season from the 30-year-old has attracted attention from multiple clubs, with Robin Van Persie’s Feyenoord side also reportedly in the mix for his signature.
Vaessen signed for FC Groningen in 2024, after spending the previous nine years of his career with RKC Waalwijk.
The report states that the financial side of a deal would be no issue for Wrexham, but it remains to be seen whether Vaessen would be willing to leave in January, despite being keen on the idea of playing English football.
Wrexham have been short of options in goal after summer signing Danny Ward was ruled out of action for up to four months after dislocating his elbow in August.

Wrexham’s ambition is to eventually secure promotion to the top-flight, which means looking to add extra quality to their goalkeeping department may be necessary.
However, if Vaessen was brought to Wales, it would leave them with a dilemma.
Ward will soon return to fitness, whilst Arthur Okonkwo has proved himself to be a capable Championship shot-stopper so far this season.
Adding a third goalkeeper to that mix would surely mean that either Ward or Okonkwo would be sold, which may not be a decision the Red Dragons want to make at this moment in time.
