Wrexham to bring in Steve Nickson from Newcastle as new sporting director | OneFootball

Wrexham have agreed a deal to appoint Newcastle United head of recruitment Steve Nickson as their new sporting director.

He will start on two September in a newly created role once the transfer window closes. The Athletic reports that he was set to leave Newcastle, with a Championship move viewed as most likely.

Nickson, 61, brings extensive experience across senior and academy recruitment after 15 years on Tyneside.

Newly relegated West Ham United and Birmingham City had been linked, but Wrexham have won the race for the renowned talent spotter.

Manager Phil Parkinson was kept informed during talks and approved the move. Wrexham have been approached for comment.

Since 2017 Nickson has led Newcastle’s scouting operation as head of recruitment. He previously served as head of youth recruitment there, having held a similar post at Blackburn Rovers before arriving in 2011.

Sven Botman, Ayoze Perez and Joelinton were among signings made on his watch, while he also drove moves for prospects Antonio Cordero and Vakhtang Salia.

After a pre-season tour of the United States, Wrexham begin their Championship campaign at Cardiff City on 17 August.
