Wrexham are monitoring the EFL investigation into Southampton and Middlesbrough’s alleged spygate as a verdict draws near.

According to The Times, Wrexham will leave matters to the EFL. The Cae Ras pitch has been dug up and the first-team squad are on holiday, so a semi-final replay could not be staged.

Tonda Eckert’s side await the decision of an independent panel after an EFL misconduct charge alleging spying on Middlesbrough before the first leg at the Riverside. Southampton await that ruling.

On Friday, Middlesbrough called for Southampton to be removed from the final. The Saints won the semi-final 2-1 on aggregate. Shea Charles struck late to book Wembley next weekend.

Middlesbrough want to take the final place if Eckert’s team are found guilty. Wrexham narrowly missed the play-offs after a 2-2 draw with Boro at the Racecourse Ground on the final day.

They finished seventh, two points behind Hull, who squeezed into the top six with a win over Norwich City. Further complications for Wrexham include released players and loanees having already departed.

An independent hearing is scheduled on or before Tuesday 19 May, with a decision to follow as soon as possible. The final, scheduled as Southampton against Hull City, remains set for Saturday 23 May at 4.30pm, though the fixture could yet change, with contingency and appeal processes under consideration.
