Wrexham’s surge shows little sign of slowing. Three straight promotions have them seventh in the Championship and into the FA Cup last 16.
Backed by co-owners Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds, they have climbed from the fifth tier since the February 2021 takeover. According to NY Times, recruitment this season totals about £38million.
Manager Phil Parkinson has refreshed the squad. Nathan Broadhead joined from Ipswich for a club-record £10million but has four goals in 24 league games. Kieffer Moore, at six ft five in, has 10 in 29.
The FA Cup run includes a penalty shootout win over Nottingham Forest and victory against Ipswich, setting up Chelsea at The Racecourse next month. Wrexham are nine to two to progress and 100 to one to win it. Before that tie on the weekend of seven to eight March they play Ipswich, Portsmouth, Charlton Athletic and Watford.
Home defeats to Norwich City and Millwall have checked momentum, leaving them outside the top six after playing one more than Hull City in fifth and two more than Ipswich. An 89th-minute equaliser meant a 2-2 draw at Bristol City.
Per FotMob, they rank 13th for expected-goals difference and 18th for expected-goals conceded. They are sixth for Big Chances, hinting at wasteful finishing.
With 14 league matches left, the play-offs remain in reach and the cup run suggests Parkinson’s approach may suit knockouts. Promotion odds are 22 to one. It may be a season too soon, yet the Premier League remains within sight.
