WSL 2 club Durham have warned they will cease operations within 21 days unless fresh investment arrives.
The club said in a statement that they are seeking offers for investment or a full sale after months of talks with potential backers fell away, and that without new funds they cannot operate in a fully compliant way in the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 for 2026/27.
Staff and players have been formally briefed on the potential shutdown.
Founded in 2007 as a single under-10 girls grassroots team, Durham have expanded without backing from a men’s professional club. The majority shareholders can no longer keep pace with the rapid growth of the women’s game, and are seeking a party to build on the club’s legacy.
The Wildcats have twice reached the Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals and have also made the League Cup last eight on two occasions.
They finished 10th of 12 in the second tier last season, which also includes Sunderland Women and Newcastle United. Neil Redfearn took charge for the final six games.
