Leicester City were dealt a late blow in their latest Women’s Super League clash at King Power Stadium on Sunday. Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone came off of the bench to score a long-distance screamer in front of a record-breaking WSL crowd for the Foxes.

Leicester searching for first win since February

Leicester City were looking for their first win under interim manager Jennifer Foster after going six games without a victory. A recall to the first team for goalkeeper Janina Leitzig caused excitement for the home fans, as did news that Ella Toone started on the bench.

The match fell into a slow pace and United saw their chances find a determined Leitzig in goal as she denied Geyse, Melvine Malard and Leah Galton. Leicester also had chances of their own as Jutta Rantala, the Foxes’ top-scorer this season, saw an effort from outside the box dip over the crossbar.

Toone stuns the Foxes

Leicester’s biggest chance came when the energetic Missy Goodwin’s strike rebounded, and although Yuka Momiki stretched, she could only steer the ball onto the post. Surprisingly, the ball then rolled slowly around the goal line, needing a touch to cross the line. However, it found the safety of Mary Earps’ gloves instead.

United, with just one win in their last three games, brought on Lucía García, Nikita Parris, and Toone to create more clear-cut chances. Not long after the changes, Toone struck from distance, with what turned out to be the match winner. The Lioness and Man United fan favourite will be expected to reference the strike on her new podcast with Alessia Russo.

Leicester City forward Yuka Momiki was a constant threat throughout. She has settled really well into WSL life and is an exciting prospect for next season.

Late on, Leicester tried to put pressure on United and the ball fell to Saori Takarada, who forced a save from Earps with a low drive. That turned out to be the last chance, as Manchester United held on for the win and three points.

Coming up next

Manchester United take on rivals Liverpool in the WSL, with one eye on the FA Cup final in May. Leicester travel away to West Ham in the league. With their status secure for next season, the Foxes turn their attention to their manager search.
