Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Finland international Eveliina Summanen has signed a new long-term contract with the club.
The 27-year-old midfielder first joined the Lilywhites in January 2022 from Swedish side Kristianstads DFF. Despite spending the majority of her career playing in Finland and Sweden, Summanen slotted in at Spurs. seamlessly. She featured 12 times in the second half of the 2021/22 season.
She has been a consistent attacking threat for Spurs, especially in her first full season with the club. During the 2022/23 season, the midfielder registered 11 goal involvements across all competitions — her best return to date.
Tottenham have made major advancements in the previous few seasons, and one could argue that Summanen has driven this growth. The Finland international played a pivotal role in their run to their first FA Cup final which they lost to Manchester United.
The Lilywhites currently sit fifth in the WSL standings, just four points behind an historic Champions League position. The 27-year-old, who reached 100 appearances for the club earlier this campaign, would surely love to etch her name further into the history books with European qualification.
On her new deal, Summanen said: “I’m happy here. I’ve found my place at Spurs, and I think it was natural to keep going on that journey. That’s why I’m excited to stay here, to see what we can build on. Hopefully [we can] achieve big things.”
Regarding Summanen’s new deal, Head Coach Martin Ho, said: “We are delighted that Eveliina has committed her future to the club. She has been a key part of our performances this season, bringing real control, intelligence and consistency to our midfield. Her technical quality in possession, ability to play forward under pressure and tactical understanding of the game give the team stability and direction, while her composure in duels and competitive mindset allow her to influence key moments both with and without the ball.
“What excites us even more is that Ev still has room to grow. Her behaviours every day, the way she trains, prepares and carries herself, and her professionalism and attitude are infectious within the environment.”
On the international stage, Summanen represented Finland in the last two editions of the UEFA Women’s Euros. She has over 80 caps for the national team and has scored 15 goals.
