3 players currently playing in other European countries that Wycombe Wanderers could sign this summer.

Wycombe Wanderers left supporters stunned in January by dipping into the European transfer market, which is something the club had never properly explored before.

The ownership group, spearheaded by former Arsenal and Everton man Dan Rice, really showed their ambitions, smashing the transfer record not once, but twice within a matter of days on two Danish imports.

Anders Hagelskjaer joined from Norwegian side Molde in a deal believed to be worth around £500,000, which smashed the previous record which stood for over 20 years, when Darren Currie swapped Barnet for Wycombe in 2001 for £200,000.

The record only lasted for a matter of days though, as Wanderers were back in the European market again, this time bringing Viborg midfielder Magnus Westergaard to the club for a fee understood to be around £850,000.

With that in mind, we could see the Chairboys dip into this market once again this summer. So, Football League World came up with three players from Europe that the club could target this summer.

Dapo Afolayan

FC St Pauli - Winger

One player who could be in line for a return to England this summer is former Bolton Wanderers star Dapo Afolayan. The winger is currently playing for Bundesliga outfit FC St Pauli, following a £500,000 switch from the Trotters in 2023.

In a scathing interview in May, the 27-year-old openly discussed a change of clubs, citing a lack of game time and not feeling valued at the German club. After the season ended, Afolayan headed to London to meet up with the Nigeria squad.

With Wycombe likely looking to add some experienced firepower to their attacking arsenal, following a poor end to the season for their current wingers, they could look to secure a cut-price deal for the wantaway forward.

Wanderers also like to add player who can play in multiple positions, which the Nigerian can. During his career, Afolayan has played all across the front three, making him a great versatile option for Mike Dodds.

He would also not require an ESC slot, as the attacker was born in England. This is key for any deals Wycombe do in the European market, as they have no ESC slots left to allocate, as Hagelskjaer and Westergaard occupy those.

If the Chairboys were to explore an ambitious move for Afolayan, this would be a huge statement of intent, and would see a proven top-level League One player with plenty of versatility arrive at Adams Park.

Bradley Fink

FC Basel - Striker

The striker position is currently the talk of the town in Wycombe, as it remains unclear whether Richard Kone will remain at the club beyond the summer, as West Ham United continue to sniff around the Ivorian.

Regardless of the decision made on the 21-year-old's future, you get the feeling that the Chairboys will need to recruit another striker even if Kone remains at Adams Park. Daniel Udoh, who is often deployed as a winger, is currently the only other option at the club.

This could see the recruitment team look to find another young striker to play second-fiddle to the Ivorian, and the man they could look to is FC Basel's Bradley Fink, who was once likened to Erling Haaland during his time at Borussia Dortmund.

Sadly, Fink hasn't lived up to that title so far in his career, with just a solitary goal to his name last term for the Swiss Super League champions. With that in mind, the striker could be offloaded this summer.

The Swiss youth international would be a perfect signing for Wycombe, as at just 22-years-old, he has plenty of time to still grow and develop into an excellent player.

Standing at 6'4", Fink wouldn't be phased by coming up against powerful EFL defenders, and would certainly suit Dodds' much more direct style of play he's tried to employ at Wycombe. He also doesn't require an ESC slot, thanks to his English heritage.

Ibrahim Buhari

IF Elfsborg - Centre-back

Another position that may need another quality reinforcement at Adams Park is centre-back. Wanderers have already added Dan Casey from Motherwell, but are still short of quality depth.

This comes after Joe Low, Caleb Taylor, and Sonny Bradley all departed the club following the end of their respective contracts and loan spells. This leaves just Casey, Hagelskjaer, Alex Hartridge, Ryan Tafazolli, and Declan Skura as central defensive options.

Wycombe could look to the European market to find a new younger, powerful defender who could act as the direct replacement for the outgoing Low, and Ibrahim Buhari could be a potential option for the Chairboys.

A Nigerian under-23 international, Buhari has a plethora of experience in the Swedish top flight, and featured nine times in the Europa League last season, at just the young age of 23.

Described as a strong and athletic centre-back with good passing skills, and an offensive weapon from set-pieces, the Nigerian possesses very similar qualities to those of the Huddersfield-bound defender, which could make him a perfect addition.

Whilst it's unclear whether Buhari would qualify for a work permit, he certainly has a strong case thanks to his recent involvement in a continental competition. If so, this is an option that Wycombe should definitely explore this summer.
