Wydad take big step toward CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage with crucial win in Ghana
Wydad Casablanca are on the brink of securing place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage after earning valuable 1-0 away win over Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko in 1st leg of the second preliminary round.
The Moroccan powerhouse, determined to make deep run in this season’s competition, sealed victory thanks to decisive strike from Joseph Bakasu early in 2nd half.
With the match tightly contested in the opening 45 minute, Wydad found their moment just 2 minute after the restart. Congolese midfielder Joseph Bakasu unleashed thunderous shot from inside the box in the 47 minute leaving the Kotoko goalkeeper with no chance.
The home side’s night went from bad to worse when goalkeeper Mohamed Kamara was sent off in the 50 minute forcing them to play the remainder of the match with 10 men , a blow that limited their ability to mount comeback.
The second leg's scheduled for Friday 24 October at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca where Wydad will look to complete the job in front of their home fans and confirm their place in the group stage.
A draw will now be enough to send the Moroccan club through while Kotoko will need to win by at least 2 goal in Morocco to overturn the deficit.
