Real Madrid’s return to La Liga action after the international break is set to be anything but straightforward.
According to an update from Mundo Deportivo, manager Xabi Alonso will be forced to make several tough decisions as his side prepare for their match against Real Sociedad this weekend.
One of the biggest concerns for Alonso is the late arrival of key midfielders Federico Valverde and Franco Mastantuono.
Both players have been heavily involved with their national teams during the break and will only return around 48 hours before the match.
This leaves Alonso in a difficult position, as the duo have become fundamental in Real Madrid’s opening three fixtures. Their fitness and readiness to start could define Madrid’s approach at Anoeta.
If Alonso opts to rest them, alternatives are available. Dani Ceballos, who has put all his focus back on Real Madrid after transfer rumours earlier in the summer, could be handed a valuable chance.
Alongside him, Aurelien Tchouameni remains a reliable presence, while Arda Guler could take up his usual role.

These options provide Alonso with flexibility, though the absence of Valverde and Mastantuono from the starting eleven would certainly weaken Madrid’s rhythm.
In attack, the picture is a little clearer. Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo were not called up by Brazil, which has given them additional rest and preparation time, meaning that both are expected to start.
Both Brazilians will likely support Kylian Mbappe, who remains the focal point of Madrid’s attacking play under Alonso.
The defensive set-up also comes with its own questions, particularly at right-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal are in direct competition, with Alonso rotating them in the opening games.
With only two training sessions left before the clash, Alonso must quickly assess the condition of his returning internationals.
Matches immediately following an international break have always been a test for Real Madrid, and this one will be no different.
