Coming into the new year, Xabi Alonso found himself under intense pressure at Real Madrid, with his job hanging by a thread.
A run of poor results at the start of December coupled with reports of dressing room unrest meant that the 44-year-old’s future became a major topic of speculation, despite Los Blancos securing three wins in a row to end 2025.
However, now, according to MARCA, Alonso is more than likely to remain in charge at Real Madrid even if the team slips up in the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona this weekend.
Five consecutive victories, especially the most recent one against Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup semifinal, have brought a sense of calm around the manager’s situation at the Santiago Bernabeu.
In fact, the derby win counts double and has helped bring in a temporary ceasefire surrounding his future on the Real Madrid bench.

The derby in Jeddah had been circled in red on Alonso’s calendar. A defeat there, after having already lost once to Atleti earlier in the season, would most likely have resulted in his sacking.
But, the manager has seemingly steadied the ship somewhat, and victory after victory the team has emerged from the turbulence that had put his project at risk.
From a period where Real Madrid managed only two wins in eight matches, they have racked up five straight victories that have given the coach some breathing room.
Real Madrid have won 20 of the 27 matches they have played this season across all competitions – a 74% win rate – which places the bar at a very high level.
So, even if there is a misstep in the Super Cup Clasico final on Sunday, Alonso might have done enough to save his job, at least for now.
