Xabi Alonso insists that he is undergoing a “process” at Chelsea as pressure piles on the Spaniard after a humbling 3-0 defeat at Brentford.

The Blues were well beaten by a rampant Bees side, with goals from Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho rounding off the rout at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It leaves Alonso winless in three matches heading into the three-week international window, while Brentford are up to third in the Premier League table and still unbeaten.

Chelsea are still yet to keep a clean sheet in the league, having surrendered a lead against Hull last weekend, while their other games have seen goal-fests, including 3-2 and 4-3 wins over Fulham and Brighton, exposing their frailty in defence.

Alonso, who cut an exasperated figure at times on Friday, was asked afterwards if the result was an indication of just how hard his new job would be.

“We knew that it’s a process,” the Spaniard responded.

“It’s only five games and each game in a competitive Premier League is really hard. We knew that it was going to be hard, it's nothing new.”

He questioned his players’ mentality following the result, which leaves the Blues seventh in the table.

"This is not enough to compete in the Premier League,” he told Sky Sports.

"We were not able to maintain our level for the full 90 minutes and that’s why we were punished today.

"It’s about everything. It’s about the mentality, the football and the tactical things that we need to keep improving. We can do much better."
