Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso on Saturday made use of the opportunity to launch a stern defence of star attacker Kylian Mbappé.

This comes with the Frenchman in the midst of a rare dry streak in front of goal.

Mbappé has of course enjoyed an electric campaign to date in 2025/26, to the tune of 18 goals in 16 appearances between La Liga and the Champions League.

None of these goals, however, came across Real Madrid’s last two fixtures.

Prior to the international break, Los Blancos stuttered to a pair of disappointing back-to-back results, first downed by Liverpool, before being held by Rayo Vallecano.

Mbappé, in turn, was singled out for inevitable criticism, after failing to prove himself decisive across disappointing all-round showings in both matches.

As alluded to above, though, on Saturday, the 26-year-old has received the full backing of his manager.

Drawn on his top scorer’s name ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Elche, Xabi Alonso assured:

“Mbappé has not scored for two matches? We analyzed it. It is not a Kylian thing, it’s a team thing. The goals will return, I have no doubt.”
