Xabi Alonso is expected to take charge at Chelsea next season, with The Athletic reporting he has already signed a four-year contract.
He would replace Calum McFarlane, appointed interim after Liam Rosenior was sacked on 23 April.
Alonso was dismissed by Real Madrid on 12 January after only a few months in charge. If appointed at Stamford Bridge, it would be his third club job, following a standout 2023-2024 with Bayer Leverkusen, who won the Bundesliga unbeaten and reached the Europa League final.
The 44-year-old had also been linked with Liverpool, where he played from 2004 to 2009.
The task would be demanding, with managers rotating frequently since Todd Boehly’s arrival in 2022. Alonso would be the eighth head coach to lead Chelsea in less than four years, excluding short-term interims.
Chelsea are ninth in the Premier League this season and were beaten 0-1 by Manchester City in Saturday’s FA Cup final. The club now look likely to miss out on European football.
