Xavi Simons keen on Chelsea move, but Blues must sell to buy

RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons is open to a Chelsea switch this summer, according to Matt Law. However, the Blues must sell players before snapping up the Dutch playmaker.

Chelsea have been trying to reinforce their attack with a versatile player, and Simons fits the bill. He can play as a No. 10, 8, or on the left flank.

But Chelsea have a few players that can also play the same role.

Like Simons, Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix are positionally versatile. The Blues must sell those two before adding another similar player to the ranks.

Nicolas Jackson is another candidate to exit Stamford Bridge this summer after falling down the pecking order following the arrival of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.

Chelsea are not the only club to have shown interest in the Simons. Bayern have been tracking his progress. Sporting director Max Eberl is a fan.

Barcelona considered a reunion. Arsenal were reportedly enquiring, and Inter Milan have him on their shortlist, but he is open to joining the West London outfit.

However, it is unclear why Simons is keen on joining Chelsea, considering they may use him as a back-up option.

He is not a natural left-winger and his favoured midfield positions are occupied by Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer. He will struggle to get a look.

Simons left Paris Saint-Germain in search of game time, and he likely won’t be keen on settling for a back-up role at Stamford Bridge, which is all the FIFA Club World Cup champions can offer.

Also, from a Chelsea perspective, paying €70-€80 million for the former Barcelona starlet to provide cover makes no sense.

Surely, they can scour the market for cheaper options to bolster the roster.
