Xavi Simons, the Dutch Tottenham midfielder, was spotted buying a Flamengo shirt, sparking a flurry of online reaction. The moment was captured by retailer Classic Football Shirts.

According to Coluna Do Fla, he posed with a 1993 number seven top, an Umbro design featuring Petrobras and Lubrax. The post drew a flood of delighted replies.

Fans hailed the choice as a beauty, joked about him coming to Gávea and welcomed him to Flamengo in both languages.

An attacking midfielder, Simons came through Barcelona’s academy, then joined PSG and made his senior debut there. His standout year was 2022/23 at PSV, with 22 goals and 11 assists in 48 games. RB Leipzig then moved for him, and he has played for Tottenham since 2025/26, recording 41 appearances, five goals and six assists.

He is currently sidelined with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, an injury that also kept him out of the World Cup.

For Flamengo, 1993 was a transitional season, marked by the farewell of Júnior. Results were modest, with a mid-table Brasileirão and a Libertadores quarter-final exit to São Paulo, who went on to lift the trophy. The report added that any move for Simons is considered impossible for Flamengo, noting Tottenham’s near R$ 400 million outlay last year and the lack of a main sponsor.
