Far from the bright lights of Naturena, a strategic loan move is unfolding perfectly for Kaizer Chiefs' young defender, Xolani Cossa. Faced with a congested pathway to the senior team, the 21-year-old, who once captained the Amakhosi's DStv Diski Challenge side, was purposefully sent to the Botswana Premier League to fast-track his development. This decision, made by the Soweto giants, has proven to be a masterstroke, transforming Cossa from a prospect into a leader.

Under the guidance of veteran South African coach Owen Da Gama at Black Lions, Cossa has not only adapted but has thrived, so much so that he has been entrusted with the captain's armband. His embrace of this new chapter is unequivocal.

“Botswana is a great place to be,” Cossa told FARPost. “I have been received well, and I’m happy to be part of the project. I want to do more for the club.”

For Cossa, the move was a calculated step in his professional journey. He sees the Botswana league not as a demotion, but as a crucial incubator for his talent, providing the physicality and competitive edge he needed to evolve beyond the reserve league.

“The move from DDC to Botswana has been beneficial because the league is physical and very competitive,” Cossa explained. “The league is becoming better with each passing day. I feel I took the best move to gain more experience, momentum and become a better player.”

His belief extends to his new teammates, whose quality he holds in high regard. Despite Black Lions' mid-table position after 13 games, Cossa's vision for the season is ambitious and collective.

“Most of my teammates can play in the PSL, but they must push. We have a great team, and we’ll compete in the league. I think we can finish in the top eight.”

This display of maturity and professional conduct, highly praised by Coach Da Gama, is a testament to the foundations laid at Kaizer Chiefs.
