Bright once again proving he can be the key to the Herons' midfield

It's time La Familia began to sing Yannick Bright's praises. The unheralded draft pick from New Hampshire has become an indispensable cog in Inter Miami's midfield machine, freeing superstar Rodrigo De Paul to join Los Garzas' attack while he plays free safety in the opponent's defensive half.

Bright has also shown an improved ability to link the backline to the Herons' midfielders and, occasionally, the front line. His contributions haven't gone unnoticed by interim head coach Guillermo Hoyos.

“Yannick is the defensive and offensive balance and is a very important player for us,” Hoyos said after Miami's 5-3 win Wednesday in Cincinnati. Bright's performance earned him the first selection to Major League Soccer's Team of the Matchday this season -- his third in three seasons. “He can be slotted between the two center backs to form a back three. He is a young man with a very bright future, and he is learning to play alongside these monsters, which will make him better. We are very happy with Yannick.”

Hoyos' "monsters" presumably include iconic teammates Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and De Paul, and former teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, all of whom presumably have helped Bright hone his skills. He has been among the league's best defensive midfielders since joining Inter Miami as the 15th pick in the December 2023 MLS Super Draft after a standout career at the University of New Hampshire.

According to FotMob.com, Bright is in the 97th percentile of MLS midfielders in defensive contributions (tackles, interceptions, blocks and clearances) in 2026. The popular soccer app gave Bright a player rating of 8.3 against FC Cincinnati, his second 8+ rating of the campaign; he's averaging a 7.3 rating after 12 matches.

Bright had no transfer value upon entering the league in 2024, according to Transfermarkt.us; it has increased to about $1.5 million. Don't expect him to leave anytime soon, though; late last season, Inter Miami signed the rising star to a contract extension through 2028, with an option for 2029. His team-low $80,622 base salary ballooned to $385,000 -- the Herons' obviously value his contributions.

The son of an Ivorian father and Italian mother, Bright was born in Milan, Italy, Sept. 3, 2001. He played youth football with Alcione and Seguro before joining the youth team of Arconatese, but nothing indicated he'd have the success he's currently enjoying. In 2020, he chose to further his education at UNH...where he also played soccer. He earned a number of academic as well as athletic honors during his time as a Wildcat.

After signing that extension, Bright talked with USA Today about his rise from university to playing with the greatest player in the world.

“I think what’s nice about my story is that I'm just a normal guy. I came to the U.S. just to study. And then through hard work and resilience, I made it. So, if I did it, I think anybody can,” he said.

Inter Miami (7-2-4, 25 points) is second in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference. The Herons host the Portland Timbers (4-6-2, 14 points), with former coach Phil Neville and former Miami players Ariel Lassiter and Kamal Miller, Sunday still trying to win their first match at Nu Stadium, their $350 million brand new home. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. ET.
