Brighton are in talks with Yasin Ayari over a new deal, but there is no guarantee he stays. The Sweden midfielder is contracted to June 2027 after a £6 million move from AIK, and the club hold a further year option.

“He has an understanding of the game, is very good in tight areas and finds solutions in narrow spaces,” Hurzeler said, telling The Athletic Ayari is important and can contribute goals.

Ayari returned alongside Pascal Gross in the 1-1 draw with Leeds after an injury kept him out of the 4-3 loss at Chelsea. With Carlos Baleba sold to Manchester United in August, losing Ayari then would have been a headache.

He played in 34 of 38 league games in 2024-25, including 22 starts. Last season he made 29 league appearances with three goals and three assists before a shoulder injury in February.

Under Graham Potter with Sweden since last October, Ayari has become a key squad member. He struck twice in a 5-1 win over Tunisia at this summer’s World Cup and started against the Netherlands, Japan and France, losing 3-0 in the last 32.

This season he has started four of five matches, often with Pascal Gross, and featured in the Tromso tie, won 4-0 on aggregate. After underwhelming loans at Coventry and Blackburn in 2023-24, he has made 75 of his 79 Brighton appearances since, and his future hinges on those talks.
