Yassine Bounou will face Canada in the World Cup last 16, a reunion with his birth nation after Morocco beat them 2-1 in the 2022 group stage.
L'Équipe notes that he was born in Montréal on five April 1991, then moved to Morocco two years later, where he grew up.
The Al-Hilal goalkeeper could have represented Canada at international level. He was approached by the then coach, Benito Flores, between 2013 and 2016 while at Atlético Madrid.
At that time he had not yet played for Morocco, having been first called up in November 2012 and winning his first cap on 14 August 2013.
In 2022 he said there was never really a decision to make, calling it natural to represent Morocco after playing through all the youth ranks.
Canada are co-hosts of the 2026 tournament.
