Eddie Howe has revealed that Yoane Wissa will not make his Newcastle United debut this weekend.

The Congolese striker had been in line to make his first appearance for the Magpies since his £55million move from Brentford in the recent transfer window.

Howe explained that Wissa, 29, had suffered a knee injury on international duty with the DR Congo, and was still hampered by the issue.

"Unfortunately he won't make this game,” the Newcastle boss said of his new recruit.

“I saw him for the first time yesterday and he's feeling the effects of the injury sustained just before he came off [while on international duty]. We're going to have to see how he is."

Asked why he was willing to part with such a large sum to buy the forward, Howe replied: “An established Premier League goalscorer is very difficult to find and difficult to recruit.

“He has got great qualities, he had an outstanding year not just last year but before, so he's got a history of scoring goals.

"He's done well against us and been a difficult player for us to handle when we have come up against him and I really admire the journey he has been on to get to this point because it has not been easy for him.

"He has had big steps to make in his career but he has always adjusted and made them and hopefully he can do the same with us."

Should Wissa’s knock be worse than initially feared, he could miss some big games for his new employers.

They open their Champions League campaign - a major factor in Wissa wanting to move to the north-east - at home against Barcelona next week, before a trip to Bournemouth in the Premier League.

They face Bradford in the League Cup after that, before hosting Arsenal back in the league on Sunday, September 28.

Fellow fresh face Jacob Ramsey is also sidelined for a month with an ankle injury despite recently joining from Aston Villa for a reported £40m.

The midfielder made his debut off the bench in the defeat to Liverpool before starting the goalless draw against Leeds at Elland Road before the international break.

“Jacob is our only other injury concern and he'll miss the game,” Howe continued.

“He's suffered from that tackle against Leeds, his ankle swelled up at half-time and he had to come off. Unfortunately I think he'll be missing until the next international break so that's a big blow."

Despite those two blows, Howe will be able to call upon big-money signing Nick Woltemade, who he said was “fine” for face Vitor Pereira’s side at St James’ Park on Satuday.

“He's trained well and we're really pleased with how he's looked in the first couple of days,” Howe said of the German, who arrived from Stuttgart for a reported £69m.

“Big change for him, big opportunity for him. He's got a great nature, a great character.

“He's very calm and he's gone straight into our training and not looked out of place. He's shown his qualities. We're really pleased with how he's settled in."
