Chelsea got a really creditable draw against Arsenal on Sunday, given the Gunners are the best team in Europe right now and also that we went down to ten men late in the first half after Moises Caicedo crunched Mikel Merino’s ankle.

On the London is Blue podcast they pointed out how bitterly disappointing it was to lose Caicedo at that moment, just as we really looked to have spooked our opposition and had a superb chance to beat them and put us squarely into the title race.

Moises Caicedo’s tackle on Mikel Merino.

“Moises Caicedo has received his first red card in the Premier League, in his 130th appearance,” presenter Nick Verlaney said.

“It’s just the one game you can’t do it. You just can’t do it. Arsenal player Merino has his back to goal, not threatening anything. And Caicedo just stamps on his ankle, studs up. It’s a clear red card. It’s a terrible challenge. He is the best in the world, for me, but this is a super, super, super devastating mistake because I think that the odds of us winning this game when he’s on the pitch, if we have him for the entire game [are much better.]”

It was indeed a perfect opportunity to beat Arsenal at home and end of bad run in these games. We looked much more up for it than them, and even with ten men they could only get a draw off us.

What a moment for Caicedo to blunder…
