Marc Cucurella has admitted he knew Moises Caicedo was a very good player from their first game at Brighton together.

Cucurella joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth £63m, before Caicedo made the switch the following summer for a then British record of £115m.

After a slow start Caicedo has more than found his feet in west London and has established himself as one of, if not the best midfielder in the league.

Marc Cucurella on Moises Caicedo

Cucurella, who has established himself as one of the best in the league in his position, has stated he knew Caicedo was a good player from their first game at Brighton together.

“When he played his first game [at Brighton], he was very good,” he said as quoted on X.com.

“He was very young, but you could see that he had different skills, his tackling, how his brain worked, very fast, and he always found the spare man.

“I’ve always loved his style.”

In fact the Blues haven’t won a game since, and even his return to the side against Atalanta wasn’t enough to stop Chelsea from losing in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo injured

Caicedo started all 38 Premier League games last season, and is without doubt Chelsea’s most important player, but the Blues need to manage him this season.

Chelsea have got great depth in midfield, but that’s being tested at the moment with both Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo out injured.

Andrey Santos impressed against Burnley, and was expected to step in for Caicedo, but the Brazilian hasn’t played a minute in the last two games, with Enzo Maresca opting to go with Reece James in midfield.

The Blues need Lavia and Essugo back as soon as possible to give them more options in midfield, and the option to rest Caicedo when needed.
