Manchester United confirmed the departure of Facundo Pellistri to Panathinaikos earlier this week in a deal worth £6.8 million including add-ons.
The Uruguay international struggled for regular playing time during his four years at the club. He has now decided to move to the Greek top-flight.
Pellistri sent his farewell message to the fans on Instagram after his exit. Bruno Fernandes quickly reacted to the post saying: ‘You deserve the best’.
The 22-year-old made his United debut against Charlton Athletic in January 2023 after two seasons on loan with Alaves. He provided a late assist for Marcus Rashford off the bench.
Despite this, he was generally considered as a squad player. The right winger made 25 appearances but the vast majority of those came as a substitute.
Pellistri will now continue his young career with Panathinaikos. He has the opportunity to make a big impression with guaranteed playing time.
United could benefit from his progress in the long run. The club have agreed a significant sell-on clause in the region of 45%, as per Fabrizio Romano.
There is also a buy-back option as part of the deal. The Red Devils have the chance to re-sign him from Panathinaikos until the summer of 2027.
United are aiming to sign a marquee defensive midfielder before the transfer deadline. Talks are advanced with Paris Saint-Germain for Manuel Ugarte.
The Uruguayan is likely to join on loan with an obligation to buy for £51m next summer.
The hierarchy could also place emphasis on more outgoings before the window closes so that there are no concerns regarding the PSR spending limits.
