Enzo Maresca is not a guy you want to mess with.
We’ve complained about his lack of charm before, especially in comparison with some previous coaches we’ve had. His dispute with a journalist today in the press conference didn’t reflect particularly well on him if we’re honest.
Enzo Maresca gives a steely look in his presser.
In the press conference a few weeks ago, Maresca said that Liverpool would be “impossible to stop” if they kept winning. A Sky reporter asked the Chelsea manager if he had changed his mind in the last week, following two defeats for the Reds.
Before she had finished her question, the coach jumped in:
“You must be misunderstanding me. If you review the interview, I said if they continue the same way, that there were five games, five wins. So if a team continues to win, win, win, win…
There was then an exchange over the difference
You can see Maresca and the awkward exchange in the clip embedded here:
"Difficult to catch!" 🤨 Enzo Maresca corrects a journalist after comments he made about Liverpool 👀–
It doesn’t really matter who is right or wrong, it’s just a bit awkward to conduct yourself like this when you could just smile and do the whole interaction in a much more friendly way.
We’re glad the journalist decided to clap back and point tell Maresca “you haven’t heard my question yet.” He laughed it off and she stood up for herself, but there was plenty of tension in the room.
We’ve said it many times before – managing is more than just tactics and training drills. Getting the fans and the media onside is an important part of a top coach’s job, and it can save them when they’re under pressure. Maresca, when he shows his spiky side like this, loses a lot of the good will he has built up.
