Newcastle United have had two goalkeepers also involved in this tournament for the England Under 19s.

George Mair sat this one out from the bench, whilst his teenage NUFC colleague Roman Dowell had the unusual honour of conceding five but still being part of a team that won by a ‘comfortable’ winning margin.

Official FA site report on Under 17s match – Germany 5 England 7:

England men’s under-17s made it three wins from three during the September international window after defeating Germany in a 12-goal thriller.

Ryan Kavuma-McQueen had a hand in three goals before the break, adding to Floyd Samba’s earlier effort, which was enough to edge the Young Lions in front at the midpoint.

And the England number seven added to the act after the break, along with Sam Alabi and Hugo De Lisle, whose late strike helped pull Liam Bramley’s side to victory in Duisburg.

Reflecting the competitive history between the two nations, the pre-match stats pointed to this one following suit, with England being made to work for the upper hand early on.

Just ten minutes had elapsed when Germany thought they had taken the lead with an early move forward. Ahmad Nadji opened his body up on the edge of the area, inches away from beating Roman Dowell at full stretch.

The Young Lions were looking to hurt the home nation on the break, but as it was, Isaiah Seretis played into the Germans’ pressure, hitting an effort wide from close range.

Germany continued to work the ball through the pockets, in turn finding Marwan Omir Mirza, who netted his second goal of the week with a finish into the bottom corner.

But Die Mannschaft had no time to settle before they were brought level. Samba tricked his way inside the area on the 19 minute mark, before driving under Leonard Prescott.

England wasted no time in getting their second, this time Kavuma-McQueen stabbed the ball into the bottom corner from distance – but the dynamics of the match would soon turn once more.

Nadji continued to heap on the pressure, working his way forward before sliding his shot under Dowell to even out the scores in the 27th minute.

And then Ertugrul Yigit left England with plenty to ponder, adding the Germans’ third from inside the six-yard area after his teammate made good progress down the left.

Both nations continued to trade chances, and this time it was the Young Lions’ turn to attack, refusing to buckle when Kavuna-McQueen drew England level from the penalty spot.

As the match wore on, Bramley’s side looked to settle in possession, doing so for ten minutes before Kavuma-McQueen was met with his hat-trick when the winger was slipped through in additional time, beating Prescott.

Kavuma-McQueen was back on the board within minutes of the restart when 15 year old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli played through England’s number seven, whose effort dropped under the bar, beating the German keeper as the intensity continued to heighten from the Young Lions.

Germany attacked in response at the other end, but Seretis’ strike was curtailed by Dowell, who saved sharply to his right.

The rout continued from the Young Lions, as Alabi drove inside the area and placed his effort under the legs of Prescott.

But the momentum was back with Germany when the ball was knocked free to Mirza, with the Borussia Dortmund youngster finishing into an empty net after the MU17s struggled to clear their lines inside the box.

England continued to tussle it out in the wide areas, losing out to Germany in this instance when Seretis was met in space in the middle, earning his side a chance to cut their deficit in half from the spot – which Mirza took with aplomb.

The game started to become nippy, but the Young Lions held out well and added a seventh through De Lisle to clinch the win on German soil.
