According to Meu Timao, Yuri Alberto will not be named in Corinthians’ squad for Sunday’s derby with Santos at 16:00 at Neo Química Arena, part of the Brasileiro’s 25th round.

The striker felt pain in his right thigh during Thursday’s session. He skipped subsequent training and underwent tests that showed no new injury, but the medical team and coaching staff chose caution to avoid any risk of aggravation.

He had been on an accelerated return after a grade 2 problem in the same thigh, which had raised hopes of a comeback in the derby. The discomfort reappeared on the day he completed four weeks of treatment. The original timeline was six to eight weeks, and his progress had put him at least two weeks ahead of schedule.

Without him, Fernando Diniz can turn to Memphis Depay, Kaio César, Pedro Raul and Luiz Fernando, the Under-20 top scorer who is in the squad. Jesse Lingard and Dieguinho could also feature in attack.

The aim is to have Yuri fully fit for the Libertadores quarter-finals against Estudiantes, a competition the club view as the season’s main focus.

He has not played since 30 July, a goalless draw with Athletico-PR at Neo Química Arena. He came on at half-time and played about 30 minutes before feeling a twinge in his right leg, then asked to be substituted and left the pitch in tears.

Despite the lay-off, he remains Corinthians’ top scorer this season with eight goals in 33 matches, two more than centre-back Gustavo Henrique.
