Flamengo are tracking Botafogo midfielder Danilo, but a European contender has emerged in the race for his signature.

ESPN reports that Zenit want to sign Danilo in the next transfer window and have offered 4 million euros, R$ 23.5 million, per year. The player has not dismissed the approach, although he is not interested in playing in Russia.

Amid Botafogo’s financial crisis, Flamengo assessed targets from their rivals in January 2026 and viewed Danilo favourably. Even so, Flamengo have not made a formal bid for the midfielder.

Danilo has been Botafogo’s standout in 2026, recording seven goals and two assists in 16 appearances. He is the team’s top scorer despite operating as a deeper midfielder.

Botafogo are mired in financial and political turmoil. The club have been taken to FIFA over debts to Lyon and other teams, and have frequently been hit with transfer bans.

Flamengo now turn to their next assignment in 2026, hosting Independiente Medellín at the Maracanã on Thursday 16 at 21:30, Brasília time, in the second round of the Libertadores group stage.
