Zico has said he will back Vasco in the Copa do Brasil, a stance he framed as support for Rio de Janeiro’s clubs rather than a snub to Flamengo.

"I will always support the teams from Rio de Janeiro. My Flamengo are no longer in it, but Vasco are. It is good for Rio de Janeiro if Vasco can lift themselves, to keep the Rio teams up there," Zico said, speaking to Cazé TV.

The Flamengo great set out a view shared by many in the city, that a strong showing from any Rio side boosts the competition as a whole. Flamengo are already out of this year’s Copa do Brasil and have lost the chance to fight for the trophy.

He made clear he still wants the city represented deep into the tournament, and that the historic Flamengo-Vasco rivalry does not outweigh his regional pride.

With Flamengo eliminated, Vasco now carry Rio’s hopes and remain in the title race, though any slip could end that expectation.

The declaration drew swift reaction among both fanbases. Many Flamengo supporters viewed it as a natural position from a club legend who prizes Rio football above internal disputes, while others were surprised. Few, however, question Zico’s storied history in the Flamengo shirt.

The Copa do Brasil remains one of the most valued competitions in the national calendar, and comments like Zico’s help keep the spotlight on the tournament.
