Zimbabwean FA address Marshall Munetsi after AFCON omission row

Marshall Munetsi has become embroiled in a row with the Zimbabwean FA after being omitted from their AFCON squad despite believing he would be fit to play. The Wolves midfielder, Zimbabwe’s vice captain, criticised the decision.

In a statement, the Zimbabwean FA cited missing consent and liability waivers from Wolves, required for injured call-ups. Munetsi had been told of the requirement and the papers did not arrive before the squad deadline. Selecting him would have created uninsured risk and regulatory non-compliance under the FIFA Club Protection Programme, leaving coach Marian Marinica with no option but to omit him. It also expressed optimism over his future involvement.

Munetsi said he was heartbroken that his efforts in qualifying would not be rewarded, alleging the call was not about football or his injury and that he was not wanted.

Fellow Wolves player and Zimbabwe international Tawanda Chirewa has been selected for the tournament.

The statement followed Munetsi’s public comments after his AFCON exclusion.
