The path for Zinedine Zidane to lead France after the World Cup appears to be taking shape, with FFF president Philippe Diallo saying he already knows Didier Deschamps’ successor. "Yes, I know his name," he told Le Figaro.
There has been no official announcement. Until now Diallo had declined to offer clues, citing respect for Deschamps and a desire not to interfere before the tournament.
Asked if that successor is Zidane, he smiled and replied: "I invite you to come after the World Cup."
He added: "The France team is one of the best in the world and cannot be left to just anyone. It must be someone with many qualities and with the backing of the French", noting he had received fewer than five French applications.
Recent coverage in France has centred on negotiations with the former Real Madrid coach, including his wish for a larger backroom team led by David Bettoni, bigger than Deschamps’. Diallo’s remarks suggest those talks have advanced, opening the way for Zidane to begin a new era after 14 years under Deschamps.
