According to L'Équipe, ‘9 juillet 2006’ revisits the unforgettable 2006 World Cup final between France and Italy, spotlighting Zinédine Zidane’s only career panenka, struck in the sixth minute before the infamous headbutt.

After a foul by Marco Materazzi on Florent Malouda, France won a penalty. In his final professional match, fresh from standout displays against Brazil and Spain, Zidane took the ball and, after a three-step run-up, clipped a panenka in off the bar.

Goalkeeper Fabien Barthez looked astonished. Zidane later said he attempted it because he sensed it on the pitch and because Gianluigi Buffon knew his usual penalties, adding that a missed panenka can make you look ridiculous and that this one only just crept in.

He had never tried a panenka before and stressed it was not disrespectful. He even admitted he would have repeated the attempt had he taken part in the shootout.

The film also recalls the tense anthems, Zidane’s shoulder injury on 80 minutes, a superb Buffon save and David Trezeguet’s missed spot-kick, plus testimonies from figures such as Robert Duverne. It explores the final’s cultural legacy, the surprise of Chimbonda, Ribéry’s emergence, the Italian view and the words exchanged with Materazzi, across around 30 short videos now available online.
