Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee would gladly return to Italy in the January transfer window, according to Calciomercato.

The Dutch international joined the Red Devils from Bologna for £36.5 million last summer, but he has yet to prove his credentials.

Zirkzee made the perfect start with a late winner off the bench against Fulham, but he has failed to score in any of his next 10 appearances.

The 23-year-old has missed several clear-cut chances, and he is now behind Rasmus Hojlund in the pecking order for the striker’s role under manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dane has returned in fine fashion after injury, scoring in two of the last three games.

Zirkzee would reportedly accept a return to Serie A in January. Juventus are looking to add a player with his profile to their squad.

The Bianconeri could make an approach if United open the door for a temporary exit.

United unlikely to contemplate Zirkzee’s exit this winter

The Bayern Munich graduate joined the club after plenty of speculation, and he had the ideal beginning with an 87th-minute winner against Fulham.

However, Zirkzee has fluffed his lines since then, missing several chances to add to his tally.

Despite this, the club are unlikely to contemplate his departure this winter and will likely give him the entire season to prove his worth.

If Zirkzee can’t find consistency with his scoring, United could weigh up his future in the summer amid claims that they want to sign Benjamin Sesko.

Sesko is one of the most sought-after young strikers in European football. His arrival would most certainly pave the way for Zirkzee’s summer departure.
