New York mayor Zohran Mamdani will make 1,000 $50 World Cup 2026 tickets available to workers in the city this summer.
The scheme, aimed at tackling soaring prices for the 11 June to 19 July tournament, starts on 25 May with a lottery following an agreement with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Tickets will be spread across five group matches and two knockout ties, one round of 32 and one round of 16, with 150 available per game. Return transport will run to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where France face Senegal on 16 June at 21:00.
At a Harlem news conference, Mamdani framed the move as ensuring workers are not priced out of a tournament they helped bring to life, and joked that $50 is roughly the cost of five coffees in New York.
City councillor Yusef Salaam urged inclusivity as prices continue to climb. TicketData puts the current average entry for a group match at MetLife Stadium at $864, about €750.
