Tiago Gouveia is close to leaving Benfica to join Atlas in Mexico, with Andoni Zubizarreta overseeing the club’s sporting set-up, according to Glorioso 1904.

The Benfica squad are due to travel to the Algarve to face Villarreal in a friendly on Friday, but the 25-year-old will not make the trip.

Against Flamengo, Gouveia and Anísio Cabral were the only unused substitutes. Despite aiming to earn a first-team place, he has struggled to break into the coaching staff’s first choices and views a move as the best route to regular football.

With his contract running to 2028, he is expected to depart on a permanent deal to Mexico, where Luís Duk also plays. The switch could mark a definitive break with the Luz club.

Gouveia joined Benfica in 2017/18 and has made 40 senior appearances, scoring five goals and providing eight assists.

The outcome would accelerate Benfica’s squad restructuring for the new season, and the transfer is expected to bring a significant fee.
