Zubizarreta takes sporting director role at Atlas at 61

Andoni Zubizarreta has agreed to join Atlas as sporting director at 61, according to Superdeporte.

The former Valencia goalkeeper, a standout of the 1980s and 1990s, adds to a front-office career that has taken in Olympique de Marseille, Barcelona, Athletic Club and Porto.

Atlas, from Jalisco, finished sixth in the Clausura 2025/26. Amid change under a new owner, Zubizarreta has been brought in to help drive a return to the elite.

He will link up with compatriot Rober Pier, the former Levante defender who is already in the squad.

Pier joined in summer 2025 from Sporting de Gijón. Zubizarreta will therefore have a familiar face as he begins his spell in Mexico.
